The US Justice Department have entered the fray in a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to block the state's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, filed in a US district court, targets the redistricting plan championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on voting rights and undermines the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will survive legal scrutiny.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," stated a representative for the governor.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit claims that California's map improperly used race as a factor to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in violation of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," argued a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation constitutes the major response by the Democratic party in the continuing redistricting war that started with Texas and has extended to multiple states.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required public consent, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to gain just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the majority will shape the remaining period of the current administration, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its agenda or encounter opposition, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
